Eleven people have been killed and 13 others injured in a devastating multiple-vehicle crash on the Ofankor-Pokuase stretch of the Accra-Kumasi highway, turning the busy corridor into a scene of death, destruction and severe traffic disruption in the early hours of Thursday, August 13, 2026.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) confirmed the updated casualty figures after an initial assessment of the crash suggested that about eight people had died.
The incident, which occurred at about 4:00 a.m. between the Ofankor Barrier and the John Teye enclave, involved 24 people, according to the latest reports.
The collision involved seven vehicles, including two tipper trucks and passenger vehicles, with early reports describing the crash as a major pile-up along the heavily travelled highway.
The force of the collision left several vehicles severely damaged and created a difficult rescue operation for emergency personnel.
Thirteen survivors who sustained various degrees of injury were rushed to the Achimota Hospital for medical attention. The condition of the injured victims has not been fully disclosed, although the emergency response focused on getting those who survived the crash to hospital as quickly as possible.
The tragedy occurred before dawn, when traffic volumes on the major route were beginning to build. The crash subsequently brought movement along the Ofankor-Pokuase corridor to a near standstill as vehicles were left obstructing portions of the roadway and emergency and security personnel worked at the scene.
Commuters heading into Accra and those travelling towards Pokuase, Nsawam and other parts of the country faced significant delays as authorities worked to clear the wreckage and restore normal traffic flow.
Security personnel and emergency responders were deployed to manage the situation and facilitate the removal of the damaged vehicles.
Despite the scale of the disaster, authorities have yet to establish the cause of the collision.
The Ghana National Fire Service has indicated that investigations are still ongoing, meaning claims about speeding, driver error, mechanical failure or other possible contributing factors cannot yet be treated as established facts.
