NPP Mourns Loss Of National Leaders In Fatal Military Helicopter Crash

BY Daniel Bampoe

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) says it is devastated by the tragic military helicopter crash in the Adansi area of the Ashanti Region that claimed the lives of eight people, including two serving ministers of state, senior political figures, and members of the Ghana Armed Forces.

In a statement signed by NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, the party described the incident as “a devastating blow to the families affected and a profound loss to the nation they served.”

A Loss Felt Across the Political Divide

Although the deceased were mostly members of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) and serving government officials, the NPP stressed that in moments of national tragedy, politics must give way to unity and compassion.

“We extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. No words can truly capture the anguish of this moment. We pray that the Almighty God grants them comfort and strength during this excruciatingly difficult period,” the statement read.

Call for a Thorough Investigation

The NPP has urged government and the Ghana Armed Forces to conduct a full, transparent, and speedy investigation into the cause of the crash to ensure such a tragedy never happens again.

The party emphasised that the dignity of the lives lost demands answers and accountability.

Details of the Tragedy

The crash claimed the lives of:

1. Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah – Minister for Defence

2. Alhaji Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed (MP) – Minister for Environment, Science and Technology

3. Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna– Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator and former Minister for Food and Agriculture

4. Dr Samuel Sarpong – Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress

5. Samuel Aboagye – Former Parliamentary Candidate

6. Squadron Leader Peter Baafemi Anala – Ghana Air Force

7. Flying Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu – Ghana Air Force

8. Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah – Ghana Air Force

Appeal for National Unity

The NPP’s statement called on all Ghanaians to stand together in this period of mourning.

“In this time of grief, we call on all Ghanaians to come together in unity, prayer, and compassion. Let us stand with the families left behind. Let us console and strengthen one another,” Kodua Frimpong said.

Background of Military Aviation Concerns

The crash is the deadliest involving Ghana’s military aircraft in recent years and follows a March 19, 2024, emergency landing incident in Bonsukrom, Western Region, which fortunately recorded no fatalities.

That event had prompted concerns over the maintenance and operational readiness of the Air Force’s helicopter fleet.

The NPP says it will continue to join calls for answers, stressing that the memory of the eight who perished must serve as a catalyst for safety reforms and accountability in the military aviation sector.
