NPP Opens Nominations For Constituency Executive Elections

BY Daniel Bampoe

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has formally announced the commencement of nominations for its highly anticipated Constituency Executive Elections, setting the stage for another critical phase of the party’s nationwide restructuring and reorganization effort following its defeat in the 2024 general elections.

In a directive issued from the party’s national headquarters on June 16, 2026, General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong outlined updated guidelines governing the elections and directed all Regional Steering Committees, Constituency Executive Committees, and Regional Representatives to begin preparations immediately.

The elections form part of the NPP’s broader rebuilding agenda, which was initiated after the party’s post-election review process led by the Prof. Mike Oquaye Election Review Committee.

The committee’s findings prompted significant reforms aimed at strengthening grassroots structures, improving internal democracy, and positioning the party for a return to power in the 2028 general elections.

The latest exercise follows the successful completion of polling station membership registration, polling station executive elections, and electoral area executive elections conducted across the country over the past several months.

Nominations Open June 22

According to the directive, nominations for all constituency executive positions will officially open on Monday, June 22, 2026, and close on Wednesday, June 24, 2026.

The elections themselves will be conducted through Constituency Delegates Conferences in accordance with Article 7 of the NPP Constitution, which grants delegates the authority to elect executives responsible for managing party affairs at the constituency level.

Party officials believe the constituency elections will be particularly significant because constituency executives serve as the operational backbone of the party’s grassroots machinery and play a crucial role in organizing campaigns, mobilizing members, and coordinating electoral activities.

Regional Committees Directed To Constitute Election Bodies

As part of efforts to ensure transparency and credibility, the National Secretariat has directed all Regional Steering Committees to submit the composition of Constituency Elections Committees (CEC) to headquarters by June 18, 2026.

The committees will comprise a regional representative, the chairman of the Constituency Council of Elders, the chairman of the Constituency Council of Patrons, an elderly woman nominated by the Constituency Executive Committee, the constituency research and elections officer, and the constituency IT officer.

The regional party structures have also been instructed to inaugurate all Constituency Elections Committees by June 21, a day before nominations officially open.

The committees will be responsible for managing the entire electoral process, including receiving nominations, vetting aspirants, supervising elections, and liaising with stakeholders to ensure smooth conduct of the exercise.

Strict Eligibility Requirements For Aspirants

The NPP has maintained strict qualification requirements for individuals seeking constituency executive positions.

Under the updated guidelines, aspirants must be registered party members within the constituency they seek to represent, be members in good standing with fully paid dues, reside and vote within the constituency, and demonstrate active membership for at least two years.

In addition, candidates seeking positions such as Constituency Secretary, Research Officer, and Electoral Affairs Officer must possess at least a diploma qualification or higher.

The party, however, introduced a notable flexibility measure aimed at preventing the exclusion of long-serving members due to administrative challenges.

According to the directive, individuals whose names do not appear in the official polling station register may still be allowed to contest if they can satisfy the Constituency Elections Committee that they have remained active members in good standing for at least two years.

Party insiders say the provision was introduced following concerns raised during the nationwide membership registration exercise regarding omissions and registration anomalies in some constituencies.

The guidelines also prohibit members serving on the Constituency Elections Committee from contesting any executive position unless they resign and are replaced before the process begins.

Furthermore, aspirants will not be disqualified automatically because of incomplete nomination forms or clerical errors without first being given the opportunity to correct such mistakes.

Appeals Structure Established

To address disputes and complaints, the party has established Constituency Appeals Committees in all constituencies.

Each committee will consist of a representative appointed by the National Steering Committee who will serve as chairperson, a representative appointed by the Regional Steering Committee, and a representative from the party’s Legal Directorate.

Any aspirant dissatisfied with decisions made by the Constituency Elections Committee will have the right to petition the Appeals Committee.

The Appeals Committee is required to determine complaints within 48 hours. Where a petitioner remains dissatisfied, further appeals may be made to the Regional Steering Committee and ultimately to the National Steering Committee, whose decision shall be final.

Nomination Fees Announced

The National Secretariat has also maintained the nomination fee structure for constituency elections.

Prospective Constituency

Chairmanship aspirants will pay GH¢1,500 for nomination forms, while candidates seeking First and Second Vice Chairmanship positions will pay GH¢1,000.

All other constituency executive positions, including Secretary, Treasurer, Organiser, Communications Officer, Women Organiser, Youth Organiser, Deputy Secretary, and Nasara Organiser, will attract a nomination fee of GH¢500.

To streamline the process and reduce administrative bottlenecks, the party has activated its online payment system, allowing aspirants to make payments electronically through the NPP membership portal.

Candidates who download nomination forms online will be required to present proof of payment generated through the electronic platform when submitting completed forms.

Eleven Key Positions Up For Grabs

The elections will determine holders of eleven strategic constituency-level positions.

The positions include Constituency Chairman, First Vice Chairman, Second Vice Chairman, Secretary, Deputy Secretary, Treasurer, Organiser, Women Organiser, Youth Organiser, Nasara Organiser, and Communications Officer.

Successful candidates will become part of the party’s constituency leadership structure responsible for directing political activities and preparing the organization for future electoral contests.

Electoral Commission To Conduct Elections

In line with provisions of Ghana’s Political Parties Act, the Electoral Commission of Ghana will supervise and conduct the constituency elections under the oversight of the Constituency Elections Committees.

The involvement of the Electoral Commission is expected to reinforce the credibility and integrity of the process and ensure compliance with established electoral procedures.
