The Ministry of the Interior has described claims by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) that its head, Kissi Agyebeng, survived two assassination attempts as “unfounded” while simultaneously ordering a full-scale investigation into the allegations.
The development comes amid heightened scrutiny of Ghana’s anti-corruption institutions and ongoing debates about the safety and accountability of public officials.
The controversy erupted following statements by Samuel Appiah Darko, Director of Strategy, Research, and Communications at the OSP, during an appearance on Newsfile, a current affairs television programme in Accra, on December 6, 2025.
Sammy Darko alleged that Kissi Agyebeng had narrowly escaped two attempts on his life while discharging his duties. Additionally, he claimed he himself was handcuffed and assaulted by 17 police officers, sparking immediate reactions from state authorities.
The Ministry of the Interior, in a statement issued on Monday, emphasized that the alleged assassination attempts, if true, would constitute a severe threat to personnel engaged in anti-corruption and accountability work, potentially undermining government efforts to curb corruption.
However, preliminary inquiries raised questions about the veracity of the claims.
According to the Ministry, initial contacts with Agyebeng revealed that any alleged threats against him occurred prior to 2025.
Furthermore, the Ministry reported that no formal records or reports of assassination attempts against the Special Prosecutor exist in any police station or state security agency.
These findings led the Ministry to characterize the claims as potentially misleading, although it stressed that all such allegations must be treated with seriousness.
In response, the Interior Minister, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak has directed the Ghana Police Service and relevant security agencies to undertake a comprehensive investigation into both the alleged assassination attempts on Agyebeng and the claim by Sammy Darko regarding police misconduct.
The Ministry reassured the public that updates will be provided once investigations conclude.
The Ministry’s statement reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the lives and property of all citizens, emphasizing that Ghanaians should be able to pursue their lawful activities without fear for their safety.
Until proven, the Special Prosecutor may open himself up for ridicule and potential criminal charges for deceiving public officers with the ‘cock and bull’ story.
According OSP’s insider the story might have been framed to justify Kissi Agyebeng’s ostentatious lifestyle, styling himself like a head of state driving in bulletproof cars with motorcade.
