India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has lauded Ghana as a “shining example” of democratic resilience and inclusive national development during a landmark address to Ghana’s Parliament on the final day of his official visit.
Speaking before lawmakers and dignitaries, Modi praised Ghana’s political stability and governance architecture, stating that the West African nation stands as a beacon of hope for the entire African continent.
“When we look at Ghana, we see a nation that shines with courage, rises above history, and turns every challenge into creativity and grace,” Prime Minister Modi said in a passionate speech that drew multiple rounds of applause from the chamber.
“Your commitment to democratic ideals and inclusive progress truly makes Ghana a beacon of inspiration for the entire African continent.”
Symbolic Visit to Honour Ghana’s Founding Father
Before his address to Parliament, Prime Minister Modi paid tribute to Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, by visiting the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum in Accra.
He laid a wreath on the tomb of Dr. Nkrumah and his wife, Fathia Nkrumah, a symbolic gesture that highlighted India’s historical ties with Ghana since both nations emerged from colonial rule in the mid-20th century.
India and Ghana have maintained warm diplomatic and trade relations for over six decades, underpinned by shared values of democracy, non-alignment, and South-South cooperation.
Nkrumah and India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, were both instrumental in founding the Non-Aligned Movement in the 1960s.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
Modi’s visit is widely seen as a strategic move to expand India’s economic and diplomatic footprint in West Africa.
High on the agenda were discussions on trade, investment, technology transfer, education, and cultural exchange.
Government sources indicate that several bilateral agreements are being finalized to enhance cooperation in renewable energy, digital technology, agriculture, and youth empowerment.
“India sees in Ghana not just a partner in business, but a fellow democratic nation working to empower its citizens and uphold the rule of law,” Modi noted, emphasizing his administration’s intent to invest in Africa’s long-term development through people-centric partnerships.
Regional and Global Significance
The visit comes at a time when global powers are increasingly turning to Africa as a strategic region for trade, minerals, and geopolitical alliances.
