Sefa Kayi Bounces Back After Prolonged Absence On Radio

BY Daniel Bampoe

After months of speculation and silence, the celebrated broadcaster, Kwami Sefa Kayi, popularly known as the Chairman General, made a triumphant return to the studios of Peace FM on Monday, July 14, 2025, reclaiming his chair as host of the flagship Kokrokoo Morning Show.

His return was met with jubilation among colleagues, fans, and political observers alike, ending a prolonged absence that had fuelled rumours and raised concerns about the future of one of the most influential morning show hosts.

Legacy on Pause

Sefa Kayi, who has been the face and voice of the Kokrokoo show for over two decades, mysteriously disappeared from the airwaves in January 2025.

Initially thought to be on leave, his continued absence sparked speculation that he had either been forced out due to political pressure or taken a backseat due to internal tensions between the station and the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The backstory stretches to May 2020, when the NDC officially boycotted Peace FM’s morning show.

The tipping point was a heated on-air encounter between Sefa Kayi and NDC Communications Officer Sammy Gyamfi, during which the host reportedly threatened to eject him from the studio.

The party accused the broadcaster of being biased and dictatorial, a stance that led to a five-year freeze in relations.

This long-standing standoff affected the station’s political balance and, according to insiders, placed strain on Sefa Kayi, who had long been known for giving equal platforms to Ghana’s two major political parties.

During this boycott, the NDC declined to send representatives to Kokrokoo, reducing the show’s bipartisan appeal.

Political Truce, Public Pressure

The turning point came in June 2025, following months of behind-the-scenes negotiations. NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, also known as General Mosquito, publicly announced an end to the boycott, describing it as a move in the national interest.

He revealed that both sides had held “several meetings” and reached an amicable resolution.

“From today, as National Chairman, I want to inform Ghanaians that we have ended our boycott of the Kokrokoo show,” Asiedu Nketiah stated on live radio.

Shortly thereafter, NDC representatives resumed appearances on the show, paving the way for Sefa Kayi’s highly anticipated return.

Return of the Chairman General

On Monday, July 14, Kwami Sefa Kayi returned in style. Riding into the Despite Media premises in a black Lexus, he was met with cheers, hugs, and applause from staff, management, and supporters.

A video capturing the moment showed colleagues rushing to welcome him, some visibly emotional.

The Managing Director of Despite Media, Fadda Dickson, personally received the veteran journalist, flanked by other senior staff including broadcaster Akosua Sarpong.

Inside the studio, the mood was celebratory. Seasoned broadcasters Adwoa Yeboah Agyei, Odiahenkan Kwame Yeboah and Maame Biama Kwafo among others were present to welcome their colleague.

Listeners across the country tuned in to hear Sefa Kayi’s signature voice once again fill the airwaves, with many taking to social media to express their joy.
