Dancehall artist Shatta Wale has hinted at a possible entry into the political arena, revealing that he may contest the Ablekuma South parliamentary seat in the 2028 general elections if public demand for his leadership continues to grow.
The award-winning musician made the revelation during an interview on Ekosii Sen on Asempa FM on Wednesday, March 11, 2026.
During the discussion, the self-styled “Dancehall King” explained that any decision to enter politics would be driven by the desire to serve ordinary people rather than personal ambition.
According to him, persistent calls from supporters and members of the public could influence his decision to run for office.
“If people call on me to enter politics, I will do so. However, I am not going into politics because I am wealthy; my intention would be to serve the people,” he said.
Independent Path If He Runs
Shatta Wale, born Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., clarified that if he eventually decides to contest the parliamentary seat, he would do so as an independent candidate, distancing himself from Ghana’s traditional party politics.
“I do not want to belong to any political party. If I ever contest, it would be as an independent candidate. I will consider it if the calls become stronger by 2028,” he added.
His remarks come amid a growing trend in Ghana where celebrities and public figures increasingly express interest in political leadership roles, often citing their influence and connection with the youth as motivation for public service.
Calls for Constitutional Reforms
Beyond the potential parliamentary bid, the musician used the platform to express broader views about governance and constitutional reforms in Ghana.
He argued that the country’s political and legal framework requires modernization to meet current national challenges.
“We are tired of the 1992 laws and constitution. We need to move forward from where we are. Other countries have progressed, so we must also examine how we can advance,” he said, referencing the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.
Shatta Wale noted that any political ambition he might pursue would be accompanied by concrete policy proposals aimed at addressing socio-economic challenges, particularly those affecting young people.
“People should understand that we also have policies we want to introduce into the system. That is what will make a real difference,” he explained.
Celebrity Influence and Public Service
Over the years, Shatta Wale has evolved from being just a music star to a controversial but influential public figure whose views on governance, youth empowerment, and entrepreneurship often generate national conversation.
His ventures outside music, including the ride-hailing initiative Shaxi, have been presented by the artiste as part of efforts to create employment opportunities for young Ghanaians.
The Ablekuma South constituency, located in the Greater Accra Region, is traditionally a competitive parliamentary seat and would represent a significant political battleground should the musician decide to run.
Music Still The Priority
Despite the political speculation his remarks have generated, Shatta Wale stressed that his primary focus remains his music career and personal projects for now.
He also reiterated his strong attachment to Ghana, noting that although he has opportunities to live abroad, his connection to the country keeps him rooted at home.
While his political intentions remain tentative, the artiste’s comments suggest that a potential Shatta Wale political campaign in 2028 may depend largely on how strongly his supporters and the wider public push for his involvement in national leadership.
