What was expected to be one of the biggest celebrations of Ghanaian music in the United Kingdom ended in confusion and disappointment after ShattaFest UK was abruptly cancelled following a stampede and overcrowding incident that forced police to intervene on public safety grounds.
The highly anticipated event, which was scheduled to feature Ghanaian dancehall superstar Shatta Wale as the headline act, attracted thousands of fans from across the United Kingdom and beyond.
However, the festival was brought to an unexpected halt after authorities determined that the venue had exceeded its approved capacity, creating dangerous conditions that reportedly led to a stampede.
According to UK police, the situation escalated after overcrowding at the festival grounds posed a serious risk to public safety. Emergency services were immediately deployed to the scene as officers moved to prevent the situation from worsening.
A police officer captured in a widely circulated video confirmed that the event had been cancelled because of the incident.
“There’s been a massive accident, a stampede which led to quite a lot of people getting hurt, and for that reason and for public safety it has to be shut down,” the officer stated.
Following the intervention by security agencies, the organisers, Ghana Party in the Park, released an official statement confirming that the festival had been suspended due to what they described as a major incident at the venue.
“Due to a major incident at the festival site, the event has been temporarily paused. Please do not travel to or come to the festival site until further notice,” the organisers announced.
They explained that emergency services and relevant authorities were managing the situation and appealed to patrons to stay away from the venue to allow first responders to carry out their duties safely.
“We kindly ask everyone to stay away from the area to allow them to carry out their work safely. We will provide further updates as soon as more information becomes available. Thank you for your patience, understanding, and cooperation,” the statement added.
The cancellation comes just days after excitement had peaked over Shatta Wale’s appearance at the UK event.
The concert was expected to attract thousands of members of the Ghanaian diaspora and international fans eager to witness the award-winning dancehall musician perform.
Ironically, the UK event followed a period of celebration for Shatta Wale after Ghanaian businessman and Rigworld Group Chief Executive Officer Kofi Amoa-Abban publicly honoured the musician with a luxury black Ferrari from his private collection, praising his immense contribution to African music and endorsing his UK performance.
The excitement surrounding that gesture had further heightened expectations for ShattaFest UK.
Despite the abrupt cancellation, authorities had, as of the time of the announcement, not confirmed the exact number of people injured or whether any arrests had been made in connection with the overcrowding and stampede.
Similarly, organisers had not indicated whether the event would be rescheduled or whether ticket holders would receive refunds, leaving many patrons uncertain about the next steps.
As investigations continue, fans, organisers and the entertainment industry will be awaiting official updates from UK authorities regarding the circumstances that led to the incident, the condition of those reportedly injured, and whether ShattaFest UK will eventually be rescheduled.
Meanwhile, Shatta Wale’s management has expressed sympathy for everyone affected by the unfortunate incident, stating that their thoughts remain with those caught up in the tragedy as authorities continue their work.
