What was meant to be a show of party unity on the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) nationwide “Thank You Tour” in Berekum quickly descended into a public verbal showdown between Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe (popularly known as Abronye DC), and former Assin Central Member of Parliament and 2024 presidential hopeful, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.
Both men, known for their fiery rhetoric, clashed on stage and in subsequent media interviews, revealing deep fractures within the party’s upper ranks.
Abronye First Salvo
Addressing party supporters at the Berekum event, Abronye seized the moment to respond to months of accusations levelled against him, particularly claims that he had masterminded a political plot against a presidential candidate—believed to be Kennedy Agyapong—during the NPP’s internal contest.
Without mentioning names, Abronye stated firmly: “I have been accused of plotting against certain candidates. I want everyone here to know that I did not orchestrate anything. My support for Bawumia was based on conviction, not manipulation.”
He lamented the state of the party and what he described as the toxic arrogance that had permeated its leadership.
“Arrogance is what has brought us here,” he declared. “It is time we tell ourselves the truth. If we continue on this path, the NDC will walk back into power in 2028.”
Calling for restraint and unity, Abronye warned: “The insults must stop. We need unity, but genuine unity—not the kind where some insult others in private and pretend to smile in public.”
Though his tone was cautionary, his message was a clear swipe at Kennedy Agyapong, who took the microphone after him visibly agitated.
Venom
Kennedy Agyapong responded with characteristic fire. While he didn’t immediately name Abronye, the target of his remarks was clear.
“Nobody is a better man than the other, but because of this party, some people talk as if they are men,” he began.
“They are not men, they are women. When it comes to monetary contributions, they cannot partake in it.”
Referring to individuals who act superior despite depending on the generosity of others, Kennedy added: “They have to go and beg, yet they talk as if the whole world is for them. If not for the sake of unity, some of them cannot even speak the way they speak because they are even shy coming to my house.”
He didn’t stop there. In another scathing remark, Kennedy said:
“With some, we buy cars for them, and they will come out to do ‘too known.’ I will respect you, but I won’t respond to some people, or else you would see a showdown. I have money; I don’t beg.”
His parting shot, delivered with raw fury, left no ambiguity about his disdain.
“Even you, poor people, think you can talk with confidence—how about rich men like me? Please! Who born dog for you to talk anyhow?”
The crowd buzzed in stunned silence, aware they had just witnessed a bitter intra-party feud erupt on a public platform.
Abronye Hits Back on Wontumi TV
Three days later, Abronye granted an explosive interview on Wontumi TV, where he dropped all pretenses and openly attacked Kennedy Agyapong.
“We are tired of Kennedy Agyapong,” Abronye began.
“Anytime he has issues with someone, he accuses the person of receiving help from him. He had issues with Naa Torshie and claimed he was taking care of her. He had problems with Yaw Adomako Baafi and called him poor.”
He continued: “He fought against the late Chairman Kutin simply because Kutin did not support him but instead backed Bawumia. That is Kennedy Agyapong for you. He also clashed with Hawa Koomson and called her a poor teacher, claiming he lobbied Akufo-Addo to get her a position—implying that even the President didn’t know what he was doing.”
Abronye accused Agyapong of weaponizing his contributions to the party.
“He boasts about financing the party more than anyone else and claims he has bought food for every NPP member,” he mocked.
“But have you ever heard Kennedy Agyapong telling party members about the advantages he has also gained?”
Concluding his on-air tirade, Abronye said: “That shows how evil and greedy he is. If you are looking for someone who is selfish, it is Kennedy Agyapong. He is a dishonourable man, yet he claims he has fed everyone in the party.”
Kennedy Doubles Down on Metro TV
Responding on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana, Kennedy Agyapong dismissed the suggestion that he should ignore Abronye’s attacks.
“That is why I said, look, the way things are going, what happened at Brikumu—the way Abronye insulted me—he is a good friend that I have helped,” Kennedy said.
“But because of politics, he gets opportunity to talk to me anyhow.”
Rejecting the idea that he should stay silent, Kennedy declared:
“Everybody says, don’t say anything. That I would not accept. If Kennedy Agyapong is quiet, it doesn’t mean I would let anybody take me for granted. That is not Kennedy Agyapong.”
He stressed that silence would mean faking integrity.
“It means I’ll be faking. The truth is truth, and I’m always defending. I could not allow this guy to diss me the way he dissed me in front of people, and I could not say anything.”
In a surprising analogy, Kennedy Agyapong likened the situation to a marital conflict involving boxing legend Mike Tyson.
“Let me give you a reference. If you know Mike Tyson—Mike Tyson and his wife granted an interview, and in the course of the interview, the wife insulted him. He didn’t even understand it until they got home. That caused the divorce.”
A Party in Crisis?
While both men continue to trade blows on air and at party events, the real casualty may be the NPP itself.
The public airing of grievances between two high-profile figures suggests that beneath the surface, deep divisions remain following the party’s loss in the 2024 general elections.
