In a deeply disturbing case that has shocked residents of Kasoa, a 24-year-old woman, Mary Tawiah, has been arrested by the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Kasoa Divisional Police for allegedly attempting to poison her own son in what is believed to be an emotionally charged response to her boyfriend’s betrayal.
According to preliminary police investigations, Mary, who had been cohabiting with her boyfriend, Kobby Nbelenbele, in Teshie, became distraught after discovering that he had secretly moved to Kasoa to live with another woman.
The betrayal is reported to have triggered a breakdown, culminating in a public confrontation and what nearly became a tragic act of child endangerment.
From Confrontation to Crisis
Eyewitnesses say the emotional showdown occurred at the Kasoa Old Market where Mary confronted Kobby and his alleged new partner.
What began as a heated verbal exchange quickly escalated when Mary, visibly distressed and overwhelmed, allegedly threatened to kill their child as a form of revenge against Kobby.
In a dramatic and horrifying turn, she reportedly pulled a suspicious substance from her bag and attempted to force it into her son’s mouth.
Fortunately, vigilant bystanders intervened just in time, preventing a potential tragedy.
Mary was immediately restrained and handed over to the police. The substance in question has since been taken for laboratory analysis.
Police Action and Investigations
Mary is currently in police custody, and according to authorities, Kobby Nbelenbele has also been detained and is assisting with investigations.
While the primary suspect is Mary, the police say they are also looking into the broader circumstances, including any history of domestic abuse or neglect that may have contributed to the situation.
A source close to the case described the incident as a “classic example of how untreated emotional trauma and relationship breakdowns can spiral into dangerous territory.”
Meanwhile, the child — whose identity is being withheld for protection — has been taken into temporary protective custody and is reported to be in stable condition. Social welfare officials are monitoring his wellbeing.
Next Steps
DOVVSU has confirmed that Mary Tawiah will face charges related to attempted murder and child endangerment, pending the outcome of ongoing investigations and psychological assessments.
Police say the case will be handled with sensitivity, but with firm resolve to ensure justice and child safety.
