37 Military Hospital Closes Emergency Unit For Fumigation

By Issah Olegor

The 37 Military Hospital, has announced the temporary closure of its Medical Emergency Unit to allow for a scheduled fumigation exercise.

The shutdown will take effect from Wednesday, June 4 to Saturday, June 14, 2025, according to a public statement issued by the Ghana Armed Forces’ Department of Public Relations.

The hospital, located in Accra and managed by the Ghana Armed Forces, cited routine environmental health maintenance as the reason for the closure.

The decision is part of a proactive effort to maintain high hygiene and safety standards across the facility.

Essential Services Affected

The Medical Emergency Unit, which typically handles accident victims, acute health conditions, and other urgent medical cases, will be entirely inaccessible during this period.

Authorities have advised the general public to seek emergency medical attention at alternative hospitals and clinics while the fumigation is underway.

Despite the closure of the main emergency unit, the Trauma Surgical Emergency Unit will remain operational to serve entitled persons, likely referring to military personnel and other individuals covered under specific healthcare arrangements. No further details were provided on the criteria for entitlement.

Public Response and Operational Context

This scheduled fumigation follows standard health and safety protocols regularly undertaken by large medical institutions, particularly those operated by the military.

Such exercises are typically intended to control pests and prevent infections, especially in high-risk environments like emergency and surgical units.

Communication and Assurances

The announcement, signed by Lieutenant R.K. Kotoku on behalf of the Acting Director General of Public Relations of the Ghana Armed Forces, expressed regret for any inconvenience caused and emphasized the hospital’s commitment to public safety.

“All medical emergency cases should be referred to other facilities during this period,” the statement read. It also encouraged the media to disseminate the information widely to ensure public awareness.
