The remarkable World Cup journey of Curaçao has been dealt an emotional turning point following the resignation of veteran Dutch coach Dick Advocaat, who has stepped down as head coach of the Caribbean nation just months before the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Advocaat’s decision, reportedly driven by serious health concerns involving his daughter, brings an abrupt end to one of the most extraordinary coaching chapters in international football.
At 78 years old, the veteran tactician had recently etched his name into history by guiding Curaçao to their first-ever World Cup qualification, a feat that transformed the small island nation into one of the tournament’s most compelling stories.
His departure also ends what could have been another historic milestone — the chance to become the oldest coach ever to lead a team at a FIFA World Cup. Despite the magnitude of the achievement and the global spotlight awaiting Curaçao at the Mundial, personal circumstances proved stronger than professional ambition.
“I’ve always said family is above football, so this is a self-evident decision,” Advocaat said in a statement reported by the BBC.
“But that doesn’t change the fact that I’m going to miss Curaçao, the people there and my colleagues very much.”
A Historic Qualification Campaign
Advocaat’s impact on Curaçao football has been transformative. Under his leadership, the island nation of roughly 150,000 people navigated a difficult qualification campaign, culminating in a decisive 0–0 draw with Jamaica at the National Stadium in Kingston — the result that sealed their historic World Cup ticket.
Notably, Advocaat was not physically present for that defining match, having traveled to attend to his daughter’s health issues, a situation that foreshadowed the personal challenges that would later lead to his resignation.
Curaçao’s qualification instantly elevated the country’s football profile on the global stage, earning them a place in Group C of the 2026 World Cup alongside Brazil, Morocco, and Haiti — one of the tournament’s most challenging groups.
Transition To New Leadership
Following Advocaat’s exit, Curaçao’s football authorities moved swiftly to stabilize the team’s technical leadership, appointing Fred Rutten as the new head coach.
Rutten brings extensive European experience, having previously managed top clubs including FC Twente, PSV, Feyenoord, and German Bundesliga side Schalke 04.
