Adutwum Cracks Down On Illegal Mining Threat At Lake Bosomtwe

By Daniel Bampoe

Former Minister for Education and Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has condemned reported illegal mining activities around Lake Bosomtwe, warning that the environmentally sensitive water body must be protected from destruction.

The lawmaker disclosed that he has already engaged security agencies and the relevant state institutions to halt the alleged illegal mining operations and ensure that those responsible are brought to book.

In a statement issued on his official social media platforms, Dr. Adutwum described Lake Bosomtwe as one of the constituency’s most valuable natural assets, stressing that its ecological, economic and tourism importance cannot be sacrificed to illegal mining.

According to him, the lake serves as a vital source of livelihood for many communities, supports the local tourism industry and remains an important part of the cultural and environmental heritage of the Bosomtwe Constituency.

“I have received with great concern reports of illegal mining activities around Lake Bosomtwe,” Dr. Adutwum stated.

He said the reports were deeply worrying given the significance of the lake to both residents and the country’s environmental conservation efforts.

“Lake Bosomtwe is one of our constituency’s greatest natural treasures. It supports livelihoods, attracts tourists, and is part of our identity. We cannot allow its beauty and environmental value to be destroyed by illegal mining,” he stressed.

Dr. Adutwum strongly condemned the reported activities and assured residents that immediate steps were being taken to stop the operations before irreversible environmental damage occurs.

According to him, he has already contacted the security agencies and other relevant authorities to intervene.

“I have engaged the security agencies and the relevant authorities, and the necessary steps are being taken to stop the operations and deal with those involved,” he stated.

The Bosomtwe legislator pledged to continue monitoring developments closely while collaborating with government agencies, traditional authorities and other stakeholders to safeguard the lake for future generations.

“I want to assure the people of Bosomtwe that I will continue to follow this matter closely and work with all stakeholders to protect Lake Bosomtwe for the benefit of present and future generations,” he said.

He further appealed to residents and the general public to support efforts aimed at preserving Ghana’s natural resources by reporting illegal mining activities and promoting responsible environmental practices.

“Let us all play our part in protecting our environment. Together, we can keep Lake Bosomtwe safe,” he urged.

Lake Bosomtwe, the only natural crater lake and a major tourist attraction in the Ashanti Region, has long been recognised for its ecological significance, biodiversity and contribution to the local economy through fishing, tourism and related businesses.

In recent years, Ghana has intensified the fight against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, following growing concerns over the destruction of forests, rivers, farmlands and other environmentally sensitive areas across the country.
