Antoine Semenyo Powers Man City To FA Cup Victory Against Chelsea

Ghana international Antoine Semenyo etched his name into FA Cup history after scoring the winning goal for Manchester City in their 1-0 victory over Chelsea in the 2026 FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium.

The 26-year-old forward produced a moment of brilliance in the 72nd minute, improvising a clever flicked finish that ultimately handed Pep Guardiola’s side their 16th FA Cup title and a second domestic cup triumph of the season following their Carabao Cup success earlier in the campaign.

For Semenyo, the goal represented the latest chapter in an extraordinary football journey that began far away from the glamour of Wembley and elite European football.

From Non-League Football To The Biggest Stage

Just eight years ago, Semenyo was playing non-league football during a loan spell at Bath City, still searching for his breakthrough in the professional game.

Now, the Ghanaian attacker has become one of the Premier League’s most talked-about forwards after his high-profile January move from AFC Bournemouth to Manchester City for a reported £62.5 million fee.

Since arriving at the Etihad Stadium, Semenyo has quickly justified the massive investment, delivering key goals and performances as Guardiola’s side chased silverware on multiple fronts.

His latest contribution — a stunning winner in the FA Cup final — instantly elevated him into Manchester City folklore.

Moment Of Magic

The final itself was a tense and tactical affair, with Chelsea frustrating City for long periods through disciplined defending and counter-attacking football.

But with the game heading toward extra time, Semenyo produced the decisive moment.

Receiving the ball inside the penalty area, the Ghanaian forward reacted instinctively with a brilliant improvised flick that beat the Chelsea goalkeeper and sent the Wembley crowd into celebration.

“It has happened a couple of times in training — it happened perfectly today,” Semenyo told BBC Sport after the game.

“Everything happened so fast to be honest. It came straight to me and I had to improvise myself as quickly as I could.”

“I have never competed for trophies like this before, so everything is new to me. Hopefully, we can finish the job off. It is a good finish, I can’t lie.”

First Ghanaian To Score In FA Cup Final

The goal also carried historic significance for Ghanaian football.

Semenyo became the first Ghanaian player to score in an FA Cup final, adding another milestone to the rich football history on the global stage.

His rise has been particularly inspiring considering the challenges he faced earlier in his career while climbing through England’s lower divisions before eventually establishing himself in the Premier League.

“As a kid I always wanted to play for the top teams,” he added.

“It took a long time to get there, but I am grateful.”

Guardiola’s Trust Paying Off

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has repeatedly praised Semenyo’s fearless style and attacking unpredictability since his arrival.

According to the Ghanaian forward, Guardiola encouraged him not to abandon the aggressive and direct qualities that made him successful at Bournemouth.

“The first thing he said to me when I came was ‘don’t change your game’,” Semenyo revealed.

“He knows we control the game a lot, but he still wants me to be me and still create a bit of chaos.”

That chaos proved decisive at Wembley.

Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson described Semenyo’s strike as “one of the goals of the season,” praising both the timing of the run and the improvisation involved in the finish.

City Continue Trophy Hunt

The FA Cup triumph means Manchester City have now secured a domestic cup double this season and remain in contention for further honours.

Guardiola’s men are still chasing the Premier League title, sitting just two points behind league leaders Arsenal with two matches remaining.

The victory also provided emotional moments for departing City stars including Captain Bernardo Silva and defender John Stones, both expected to leave the club at the end of the season.

Meanwhile, Guardiola himself faces an uncertain future amid speculation over whether the Spaniard could end his decade-long stay at the club after another trophy-laden campaign.
