Ayawaso East Veteran MP Naser Toure Mahama Passes On

Parliament has been thrown into mourning following the death of the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, Nima, Naser Toure Mahama, a seasoned legislator whose political life was closely intertwined with the history and struggles of the inner-city Accra constituency he represented.

The lawmaker, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), passed away on Sunday, January 4, 2026, after a short period of illness.

He died at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, where he had been receiving medical care.

He was 60 years old.

Born on March 17, 1965, in Nima, one of Accra’s most politically vibrant communities, Naser Toure Mahama rose from grassroots politics to become a central figure in Ayawaso East.

His deep connection to the constituency shaped both his political outlook and legislative priorities, earning him a reputation as a lawmaker who understood the everyday realities of his constituents.

Mahama first entered Parliament in January 2013, after winning the Ayawaso East seat in the 2012 general elections.

Over the years, he successfully retained the seat, becoming a fourth-term Member of Parliament, a rare feat in a constituency known for intense political competition.

During his time in Parliament, Naser Toure Mahama played significant roles in several key committees. Most notably, he served as Vice Chairman of the Energy Committee, a critical body responsible for oversight of the power sector at a time when the country grappled with energy supply challenges and reforms.

He was also an active member of the Roads and Transport Committee, the House Committee, and the Private Members’ Bills and Motions Committee, contributing to legislative debates and policy reviews across multiple sectors.

Colleagues across the political divide have begun paying tribute to the late MP, describing him as calm, principled, and deeply respectful in his engagements.

The Member of Parliament for Akim Swedru, Kennedy Nyarko Osei, was among those who mourned him, remembering Naser Toure Mahama as a “gentle soul” who related well with colleagues regardless of party affiliation.

Other parliamentary leaders have similarly praised his honesty, work ethic, and commitment to duty.

Following his passing, the body of the late legislator has been conveyed to his residence at Spintex in Accra, where family members are meeting to finalize funeral arrangements.

In keeping with his Muslim faith, burial rites are expected to be observed swiftly. The janazah prayers are scheduled for Monday, January 5, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., after which he will be laid to rest.

Since news of his death broke, scores of constituents, party faithful, colleagues, and sympathisers have gathered at his residence to commiserate with the family, reflecting the wide impact of his political life and personal relationships.

Naser Toure Mahama’s death marks the end of a significant chapter in Ayawaso East’s political history.

For over a decade, he served as a consistent voice for one of the most dynamic constituencies, leaving behind a legacy of service rooted in humility, loyalty, and a deep sense of community.
