Don’t Recognise Sexual Misconduct

Perpetual Akwada is on a perpetual mission to rid society of moral contagions some of who have found themselves at the top of public institutions.

Doing so through her women and child rights activism she rightly demands the support of all who cherish a Ghana where our young girls can expect protection from those at the throttles of governance.

Perpetual trended a couple of days ago when her request to President John Mahama to relieve Prof Ransford Gyampo of his position as CEO of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority made headlines in the media and rightly so.

The return of the subject to the public space underscores the importance of protecting our girls at the hands of teachers in the face of sometimes abusive conduct.

Any action which threatens the safety of girls should be bludgeoned with all the energy at the disposal of government with the unfettered support of all segments of society.

We deem it reprehensible that a man who was found guilty by an internal probe instituted by his employers, the University of Ghana and punished will still find himself at the headship of a public establishment such as the Ghana Shippers Authority.

The statistics of girls or ladies being abused by their employers or superintendents in public offices is high and to ignore this reality and bestow upon a known sexual predator such as the man under review will be tantamount to be pretentious.

Girls in the care of educational authorities vulnerable as they are require special care because the moral quality of some teachers cannot be vouched for.

For the first time in the history of an independent Ghana a lady is Vice President.

An opportunity has presented itself for her to make good all the sweet coated promises she made about protecting the interests of women.

Being indifferent as this matter has popped up once more on the public space is not an option and would take a lot from her integrity if she chooses this trajectory of indifference.

Let her engage the President her boss on the matter especially as the rights activists has demanded action against the sex.

The Vice President must be seen to be championing the cause of women and not otherwise.

It is heartbreaking when we think about the possibility of young girls not feeling safe after witnessing the non-action against persons who show abusive conduct especially in the school system.

Offering appointments to persons with records of sexual predation only fuels the thought that the President could not care a hoot about recognizing such offenders.
