The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has taken a bold step by directing its lawyers to file an injunction application to restrain the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) from further harassing Gordon Asare-Bediako, a member of the association.
This decision comes after the OSP, led by Kissi Agyebeng, allegedly subjected Asare-Bediako to undue interference and harassment.
Background To the Controversy
The controversy began on April 2, 2025, when Asare-Bediako, Managing Editor of ABC News and Show Host on Movement TV and Wontumi Radio 95.9, received a call from someone claiming to be an officer of the OSP.
The officer requested a conversation with Asare-Bediako at Wontumi Radio 95.9 and Movement TV, which led Asare-Bediako to visit the OSP premises voluntarily.
During the meeting, Asare-Bediako was questioned about a statement he made on Movement TV regarding the OSP’s alleged request for a private jet from the government to facilitate his operations.
The OSP’s Actions
Asare-Bediako confirmed making the statement, citing his sources within the then government.
However, the Special Prosecutor claimed that Asare-Bediako was impugning corruption on the OSP, which he vehemently disagreed with.
When Asare-Bediako refused to disclose his sources, the OSP interpreted this as a lack of cooperation and subsequently arrested him.
His rights were read to him, and he was later granted a GHC5 million bail bond with two sureties.
GJA’s Concerns
The GJA expressed concerns over the OSP’s actions, describing them as harassment and undue interference.
In a press statement, the association’s President, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, stated that the GJA is committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that justice is served within the boundaries of legal authority.
The association believes that the OSP’s actions are an attempt to intimidate and silence journalists, rather than focusing on its mandate as a corruption-fighting agency.
Court Action
The GJA has directed its lawyers to file an injunction application to restrain the OSP from further harassing Asare-Bediako.
This move is seen as a bold step to protect the rights of journalists and ensure that the OSP operates within its mandate.
The association’s actions have sparked a national conversation about the role of the OSP and the importance of press freedom in Ghana.
Implications
The outcome of this case will have significant implications for the relationship between the OSP and the media in Ghana.
If the court grants the injunction, it may limit the OSP’s ability to investigate journalists and restrict their freedom to report on corruption-related issues.
On the other hand, if the court rules in favour of the OSP, it may embolden the agency to continue its aggressive pursuit of journalists, potentially stifling press freedom in Ghana.
