The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Asylum DOwn headquarters in Accra witnessed a political spectacle on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, as Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, stormed the premises with a massive crowd of supporters to formally file his nominations for the party’s flagbearer contest.
What made the occasion more significant was the high-profile entourage that accompanied him.
Nearly 20 former Ministers of State were present, including Peter Amewu, a one-time staunch ally of Alan Kyerematen.
Their presence symbolized a notable shift in NPP’s internal power dynamics, with some political analysts interpreting it as a major boost to Agyapong’s campaign.
Rallying Delegates
Addressing an electrified crowd shortly after submitting his forms to Abankwah Yeboah, a member of the Presidential Election Committee, the second attempt Presidential hopeful, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong urged NPP delegates to ignore what he described as external “noise” and internal intimidation.
He made a passionate appeal for unity and confidence in his candidacy, positioning himself as the only aspirant capable of restoring the party’s fortunes after its devastating defeat in the 2024 general elections.
“I’m on my knees, I beg you in the name of God, do not listen to what Ghanaians are saying. Vote for Kennedy Agyapong, and victory will be assured for the NPP in 2028,” he declared to thunderous cheers.
He further argued that the groundswell of support for his candidacy stretched far beyond the confines of the party.
“In the bars, chop bars, trotro, and markets, Ghanaians are crying for Kennedy Agyapong to lead this country,” he said, stressing that ordinary people—not just party elites—were demanding his leadership.
“Ideas and Creativity” Pledge
In a veiled jab at his opponents, Kennedy Agyapong insisted that while others boast of having “ideas,” he embodies both “ideas and creativity,” backed by a track record as a successful businessman.
“I have done it before and will continue to do it. If I tell you I’m going to create jobs, believe me. Any human being without a job has no life. Do you want life? Then vote for Kennedy Agyapong,” he told delegates.
He touted his entrepreneurial success as evidence of his ability to tackle unemployment and create sustainable opportunities for the youth, declaring that the era of empty political rhetoric must end.
A Decisive Contest For NPP’s Future
The NPP is currently at crossroads following its historic defeat in 2024, which ended nearly a decade of control over the presidency.
The loss has left the party fractured, with accusations of bias, betrayal, and disunity dominating its internal affairs.
Already, the race has been rocked by controversy.
On Wednesday, three-time flagbearer hopeful, Francis Addai-Nimoh, withdrew from the contest, citing unfair treatment by party leadership.
His withdrawal has further intensified debates about transparency and neutrality in the selection process.
Against this backdrop, Kennedy Agyapong’s dramatic entry into the race—accompanied by former ministers and a groundswell of grassroots support—has introduced new energy and tension into the contest.
His fiery rhetoric and defiant stance against intimidation have set him apart from other aspirants, making him a formidable force as the NPP seeks a leader who can connect with the masses and mount a strong challenge in the 2028 elections.
What Lies Ahead
With the primaries fast approaching, Kennedy Agyapong’s show of force at the NPP headquarters has sent a clear signal that his campaign will be anything but conventional.
While critics accuse him of being populist and confrontational, his supporters insist he is the only candidate who embodies both business acumen and political fearlessness to take on the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Earlier this week, former General Secretary of NPP, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong and Bryan Acheampong also filed their nomination papers as Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, will this morning (Thursday) also file his documents.
