Stephen Ntim, NPP National Chairman Steps Aside Ahead Of Crunch Meeting

The National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Stephen Ayesu Ntim, has been asked by his family to temporarily step away from his political duties, citing health concerns.

The announcement comes on the eve of a pivotal National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for June 17, sparking internal discussion about the party’s leadership direction amid preparations for the 2028 general elections.

In a letter addressed to the Chairman of the NPP’s Council of Elders and signed by several members of the Ntim family, including sitting Member of Parliament, Adelaide Ntim, the family formally requested that Ntim be relieved of all party-related engagements until further notice.

They indicated that the decision followed medical advice and a recent family resolution aimed at preserving the Chairman’s health and wellbeing.

The family disclosed that
Ntim, who has long been recognized for his commitment to the NPP and its values, has not been in good health recently, although this has not been publicly confirmed by the party.

“Although not official, it is well known that Mr. Ntim is not well at the moment and his condition requires time off from active professional activities,” the family stated.

According to the letter, Ntim is currently undergoing treatment and is not in a position—mentally or physically—to carry out his demanding political duties.

The family expressed particular concern about a party circular issued by the General Secretary scheduling Ntim to chair the NEC meeting at the Alisa Hotel in Accra.

They objected to this decision, calling it inconsiderate and potentially harmful to his recovery.

“Common sense dictates that Steve be temporarily excused not only from the rigours of active politics but from intra-party activities in order to make way for needed peace and solace,” the family emphasized.

They warned that asking Ntim to attend or preside over such a high-level meeting in his current condition could worsen his health and infringe on his human rights.
Ntim, who became National Chairman in July 2022 after several attempts in previous internal contests, has been a stabilizing figure within the party.

He is widely respected for his strategic leadership, calm demeanour, and deep-rooted loyalty to the NPP dating back to its formative years.

This development introduces a moment of uncertainty as the party navigates both internal restructuring and national internal elections.

While no formal statement has yet been released by the NPP leadership regarding the Chairman’s status or a temporary replacement, party insiders suggest discussions may take place at Tuesday’s NEC meeting, now expected to be chaired by fist vice chairman, Danquah Smith popularly called Butey.

The Ntim family called on the party hierarchy to prioritize the Chairman’s wellbeing and to allow him the time and space needed to focus on recovery.

They further indicated that his future involvement in party affairs remains under careful consideration, pending ongoing consultations and medical updates.

This unexpected turn adds a layer of complexity to the NPP’s internal dynamics as it prepares for its national conference in July.
