Behind Benjamin Asare’s outstanding performance for Ghana against England at the 2026 FIFA World Cup lies a deeply emotional family story of sacrifice, perseverance and unwavering faith.

While millions of Ghanaians celebrated the Black Stars goalkeeper’s heroic display in the goalless draw against England on Tuesday night, the most touching scenes unfolded hundreds of miles away in Korle Gonno, the Accra community where the national shot-stopper was raised.

The Black Stars goalkeeper became an instant hometown hero after producing a series of crucial saves to frustrate England’s star-studded attack, helping Ghana secure a priceless point in a tightly contested Group L encounter.

His commanding display between the posts earned widespread praise from football fans, teammates and pundits, with many describing him as one of the standout performers in the match.

But as celebrations erupted across the country, emotions ran highest within his own family.

When a JoyNews team visited Korle Gonno on Wednesday morning, residents proudly celebrated the achievements of one of their own, describing Benjamin Asare as fearless, calm under pressure and an inspiration to young footballers growing up in the community.

Neighbours recalled watching him develop from a young boy playing football on the streets into the first-choice goalkeeper at the biggest sporting event in the world.

The emotional highlight of the visit, however, came when Asare’s grandmother Awula Naa Tsotso reflected on the difficult journey that had brought her grandson to this historic moment.

Unable to hold back her tears, she revealed that she personally raised Benjamin after the death of his mother many years ago.

Fighting through emotion, she explained that caring for him during his childhood was never easy, but she always believed he would one day make both the family and the nation proud.

Watching him wear the Black Stars jersey and excel on football’s biggest stage, she said, was the fulfilment of years of prayers, sacrifice and hope.

Her emotional reaction resonated with many Ghanaians, serving as a powerful reminder that behind every successful athlete is often a family whose quiet sacrifices rarely receive public recognition.

Benjamin Asare’s performance against England further strengthened his growing reputation as one of the most dependable goalkeepers.

Throughout the match, England dominated possession and repeatedly searched for a breakthrough, but Asare remained composed under pressure, producing several important saves to deny the Three Lions.

His commanding presence and confident handling played a major role in ensuring Ghana secured a valuable 0-0 draw against one of the tournament favourites.

The result left both Ghana and England level on four points in Group L, keeping the Black Stars firmly in contention for qualification to the Round of 32 ahead of their decisive final group match against Croatia.
