Medical And Dental Council Board Takes Off

In a strategic move to reposition Ghana’s health regulatory institutions for efficiency and reform, the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has inaugurated the newly constituted 11th Board of the Medical and Dental Council (MDC).

The swearing-in ceremony, in Accra, brought together new board members for the Medical and Dental Council, who are expected to be the driving force behind Ghana’s push for universal health coverage, better regulation, and a more sustainable health system.

The Minister charged the new board to ensure ethical, professional, and competent healthcare delivery in every region of the country.

New Direction for MDC

Among the newly sworn-in members of the 11th Board of the Medical and Dental Council is Physician Assistant Appiagyei Buabeng, who was elected as the representative of Physician Assistants (PAs) and Certified Registered Anaesthetists (CRAs).

His inclusion is being hailed by many in the primary care and allied health sectors as a potential turning point for representation and reform within the MDC.

Dr. Buabeng, a seasoned clinician with over 12 years of experience in the Ghana Health Service, is also known for his advocacy and leadership.

He is the CEO of the Mega Jesus Clinic and founder of the Buabeng Impact Lives Project—a youth and public health empowerment initiative.

His election to the board was secured through a competitive process organized by the Electoral Commission of Ghana on March 21, 2025, where he emerged victorious with nearly 46% of the vote across 64 polling stations in all 16 regions.

Born in Patriensa in the Asante Akyem Central district but now resident in the Ayensuano Constituency, Buabeng is expected to use his new role to amplify the voices of mid-level health professionals and press for recognition, career advancement, and specialization opportunities for Physician Assistants and Anaesthetists.

Many in the fraternity believe that the MDC has historically marginalized these cadres of health professionals.

However, Buabeng’s diplomatic and policy experience—as well as his background in community health, leadership, and governance—has raised hopes that he can work with other board members to change the status quo.

A former SRC President of the College of Health and Well-being in Kintampo (2012/2013), Buabeng holds degrees in Agriculture (KNUST), Community Health and Medicine (CoHWK), and a Master of Public Health (Ensign University).

He also holds certificates in Health Systems Management and is currently pursuing a Law degree at Wisconsin International University.
