A Ghanaian TikTok content creator has been arrested by the Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team (CVET) over allegations that she published offensive and derogatory comments directed at President John Dramani Mahama and First Lady Lordina Mahama, a development that has reignited debate over the limits of free speech and the enforcement of Ghana’s cyber and defamation laws.
The suspect, Rita Konadu, popularly known on TikTok as “Mamaone” and identified on the platform as @the_onlymamaone1, was arrested in Juaben in the Ashanti Region on July 22, 2026, according to reports.
Authorities allege that the 49-year-old content creator uploaded a TikTok video containing remarks considered offensive and derogatory toward the President and the First Lady.
The specific contents of the video have not been officially disclosed, and investigators have yet to publicly outline the legal provisions under which she is being investigated.
Following her arrest, members of the Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team reportedly began arrangements to transfer her from Juaben to Accra, where she is expected to undergo further interrogation as investigations continue.
As of the time of the arrest, no formal criminal charges had been filed against the TikTok personality, and the Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team had not issued an official statement detailing the exact offences under investigation or indicating when she would be arraigned before a court.
It also remains unclear whether Rita Konadu has secured legal representation, as no lawyer or spokesperson acting on her behalf had publicly commented on the matter at the time of publication.
The arrest has generated widespread reactions across social media, with Ghanaians sharply divided over the enforcement action.
Some commentators have defended the arrest, arguing that social media users should be held accountable for content they publish online, particularly where statements are considered defamatory, abusive or capable of damaging the reputation of individuals.
They maintain that freedom of expression should be exercised responsibly and within the confines of the law.
