Ghana’s Mining Sector Achieves Record Revenue In 2024

The Ghana Chamber of Mines has announced that the country’s mining sector contributed a record GH₵17.7 billion in revenue to the government in 2024.

This represents a 51.2% increase from GH₵11.7 billion in 2023.

The sector’s growing role as a cornerstone of domestic revenue generation is highlighted by the significant increase in dividends paid to the state, which soared by over 600% to GH₵1.03 billion.

According to the President of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, Edem Michael Akafia, the mining industry’s contribution to domestic revenue rose from 8.8% to 9.6% in 2024.

The sector’s share of total government revenue also increased from 8.6% in 2023 to 9.5% in 2024.

Mineral royalties experienced substantial growth, climbing by 76.7% from GH₵2.8 billion in 2023 to GH₵4.9 billion in 2024.

The Chief Director at the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, Innocent Haligah, emphasized the importance of collaboration between stakeholders in the mining industry and the Ghana Gold Board to promote a safer mining environment.

He also stressed the need to focus on strategic areas such as local content development and the promotion of value addition to mineral resources.
