World Cup 2026: Knockout Bracket Set After Thrilling Group Stage

The group stage of the FIFA World Cup 2026 has officially concluded, with the identities of all 32 teams advancing to the knockout stage now confirmed after an action-packed opening round that produced memorable upsets, historic milestones and dramatic qualification battles.

As attention shifts to the Round of 32, football’s traditional heavyweights will be joined by several surprise packages that defied expectations to extend their stay at the tournament, while others saw their World Cup dreams come to an end.

Tournament co-hosts Mexico became the first nation to secure qualification after successive victories over South Africa and Korea Republic guaranteed top spot in Group A. El Tri completed an impressive group-stage campaign before setting up a Round of 32 clash against Ecuador in Mexico City.

Fellow hosts the United States also progressed comfortably after topping Group D under head coach Mauricio Pochettino. The Americans will now face Bosnia and Herzegovina after an unbeaten run through the group stage.

Germany returned to the World Cup knockout rounds for the first time since lifting the trophy in 2014. Julian Nagelsmann’s side finished top of Group E and earned a meeting with Paraguay, while defending champions Argentina once again demonstrated their title credentials by winning Group J behind the brilliance of captain Lionel Messi.

The South Americans now prepare for a Round of 32 encounter with tournament debutants Cabo Verde.France also marched into the knockout stage after Kylian Mbappé inspired Les Bleus to victories over Senegal, Iraq and Norway.

Didier Deschamps’ men finished as Group I winners and will now take on Sweden, while Norway’s impressive return to the World Cup after a 28-year absence earned them a last-32 meeting with Côte d’Ivoire.
South American side Colombia maintained their unbeaten record by topping Group K ahead of Portugal.

The reward for Néstor Lorenzo’s men is a blockbuster encounter against Ghana, who qualified as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams despite finishing behind England and Croatia in Group L.

The Black Stars secured four points during the group stage after defeating Panama, drawing with England and narrowly losing to Croatia. Their performances proved enough to keep Ghana’s World Cup campaign alive, with the four-time African champions now aiming to upset Colombia in Kansas City.

Morocco continued Africa’s impressive showing by finishing second behind Brazil in Group C following a dramatic victory over Haiti. The Atlas Lions will now face Group F winners the Netherlands, while Brazil begin their knockout journey against Japan.

Another African success story came from South Africa, who reached the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time in the country’s history after recovering from an opening defeat to Mexico to finish second in Group A. Bafana Bafana’s reward is a Round of 32 clash against co-hosts Canada.

Côte d’Ivoire also carried African hopes into the knockout rounds after finishing second in Group E, earning a meeting with Norway. Senegal joined the African contingent after qualifying among the best third-placed teams and will now face Belgium, while DR Congo completed a remarkable comeback against Uzbekistan to book a historic first appearance in the knockout stage, setting up a meeting with England.

Elsewhere, Switzerland will face Algeria, Spain meet Austria, Australia take on Egypt, Croatia clash with Portugal, and Belgium begin their knockout campaign against Senegal.While celebrations continue among the qualified nations, several teams were left disappointed after failing to progress.

Among those eliminated were Haiti, Tunisia, Türkiye, Jordan, Panama, Qatar, Czechia, Curaçao, Iraq, Uruguay, Saudi Arabia, New Zealand, Scotland, Uzbekistan, Korea Republic and IR Iran. Some exited after difficult campaigns, while others narrowly missed out on qualification despite spirited performances.
