Paul Afoko Bounces Back To Contest NPP Chairmanship Race

Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Paul Awentami Afoko, has officially announced his intention to return to active politics by contesting the party’s upcoming national chairmanship race.

His comeback marks a significant development within the ruling party, coming ten years after his dramatic suspension from the position in 2015.

In a statement released in Accra on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, Afoko disclosed that his decision followed extensive consultations with party faithful, supporters, and key stakeholders across the country.

He emphasized that his bid to reclaim the chairmanship was born out of “deep reflection” and the “overwhelming encouragement” he has received from grassroots members who believe the party needs renewed leadership anchored in its founding democratic values.

“This decision has not been taken lightly,” Afoko said. “It comes after careful consideration and in response to the consistent calls for leadership renewal rooted in the principles of unity, inclusiveness, and accountability that have guided the NPP since its inception.”

Afoko, who once led the NPP’s national executive team, was indefinitely suspended from office in October 2015 by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC).

His suspension, which followed a recommendation from the National Disciplinary Committee, was based on alleged misconduct and internal disagreements during the buildup to the 2016 general elections.

The decision, announced by then-Communications Director Nana Akomea, led to Freddie Blay, the First Vice Chairman at the time, assuming the role of acting National Chairman.

Following his suspension, Afoko contested the decision in court, arguing that it breached the NPP’s constitutional procedures and democratic spirit.

Although his legal challenges did not reinstate him, he remained a vocal advocate for internal reforms and reconciliation within the party.

In his latest statement, Afoko reaffirmed his loyalty to the NPP, stressing that his motivation to return stems from a desire to rebuild bridges and restore confidence among party members.

He described the current political moment as a “critical juncture” for the NPP and called for a leadership approach that prioritizes transparency, accountability, and unity ahead of the 2028 general elections.

“While the journey has not been without its trials, my focus has always been on the collective good of our great party,” he stated. “It is time for a re-energized NPP that remains faithful to its traditions while embracing the expectations of a new generation of Ghanaians.”

Afoko also announced plans to embark on a nationwide engagement tour to interact directly with delegates, regional executives, and the media in the coming weeks.

His campaign, according to sources close to his team, will emphasize inclusivity, integrity, and the strengthening of internal democracy.

He is expected to contest with Stephen Asamoah Boateng, Boakye Agyarko, John Boadu, and Chairman Wontumi.
